Civil Marriages – Step by Step

  1. Eligibility: 18+, not currently married, not immediate family, free consent, officiated by an authorised celebrant.
  2. NOIM: Lodge at least 1 month before (valid up to 18 months). Provide passport/birth certificate + photo ID; proof of divorce/death if applicable.
  3. On the day: 2 witnesses (18+). Sign legal documents; I lodge with BDM for registration.
  4. After: Apply for the official certificate (typically 2–6 weeks).

Combined Civil + Islamic Ceremony

Your marriage can be honoured legally under Australian law and spiritually through a traditional Islamic Nikāḥ — all in one dignified ceremony.

How it flows

  1. Opening sermon (Khutbah) & blessings
  2. Document verification & consent
  3. Islamic Nikāḥ — rights, mahr, ijāb & qabūl, witnesses
  4. Civil component — legal vows & signing of 3 certificates
  5. Duʿāʾ (prayer) & certificates issued

Frequently Asked Questions

1) How early do we lodge the NOIM?

At least 1 month before your ceremony (valid up to 18 months).

2) What documents are required for a civil marriage?

Passport or birth certificate; photo ID; and proof of divorce or death if previously married.

3) What makes a Nikāḥ valid?

Offer & acceptance (ijab–qabul), two Muslim witnesses, a walī for the bride (majority view), and an agreed mahr.

4) Can we do both Islamic & Civil together?

Yes — the combined ceremony covers both your religious and legal requirements in one event.

5) Is a Nikāḥ alone legally valid in Australia?

No — only the civil ceremony creates a legal marriage. The Nikāḥ can be included in a combined ceremony.
